Description
The School, built in 1844, was founded by the Duke of Devonshire and likely designed by Paxton. It features a central two-storey octagonal block made of ashlar stone, with one sash window on each face set in a plain surround with an arched head. The corners have quoins, and there is a plain doorway with a six-panelled door, where the upper panels are glazed, topped by a pedimented porch with arched openings at the front and sides. Single-storey wings extend at right angles from the central block, connected by porchways. The building has overhanging lined eaves supported by brackets and is covered with slate roofing. The School is part of a group that includes St John's Church, the Churchyard Cross, Staveley Hall, and the former stables and coach house of Staveley Hall, along with the garden walls of Staveley Hall.
