Description
Staveley Hall, now used as UDC offices, is a former manor house dating from 1604. The building has undergone significant alterations, with the front mostly reflecting late 19th-century styles, but it still features a carved stone Coat of Arms above the door dated 1604 and a northern wing roofed with old stone slates. The rear elevation is two storeys high and five windows wide, dating from the late 17th century. It includes wood mullioned transomed windows set within rusticated architraves, featuring alternating segmental and pointed pediments, and has 19th-century glazing. There is also a 19th-century canted bay window that spans two storeys, made with stone mullions and double transomes, topped with parapets. Inside, two rooms, now known as the Council Chamber and Ante-room, retain fine late 17th-century or early 18th-century panelling. The 19th-century work is attributed to Sir George Gilbert Scott. Originally, Staveley Hall was the home of the Frecheville family and later served as The Rectory. The hall is part of a group that includes St John's Church, the Churchyard Cross, The School, the former stables and coach house, and the garden walls of Staveley Hall.
