Description

This is a terrace of eight cottages built around 1891-4 as housing for workers at the Bolsover Colliery. They were likely designed by Brewill & Baily and are part of the 'Model Village' created by the Colliery Company, reflecting principles of Garden Suburb planning and design. The cottages are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and have Welsh slate roofs topped with decorative ridge cresting, along with brick ridge stacks. The terrace is two storeys high with attics. A decorative band runs across the first floor, and there’s a saw-tooth eaves cornice. The terrace is arranged in symmetrical pairs, stepping slightly up the hillside, which is reflected in the different roof levels. Each pair has two 3-light casement windows with ashlar surrounds, flanked by doorways featuring ashlar lintels, panelled doors and overlights. Above, there are two 2-light cross casement windows with stop-chamfered ashlar lintels. A pair of gabled dormers is situated above these windows, each featuring 2-light casements under chamfered ashlar lintels. All casements have small pane glazing. Walls attached to the rear enclose the back yards.
