Description

This is a terrace of eight cottages built around 1891-1894, likely designed by Brewill & Baily, and intended to house workers for the Bolsover Colliery Company. The terrace, numbered 159 to 173, includes attached rear yard walls. Constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, the cottages have Welsh slate roofs topped with decorative ridge cresting and brick ridge stacks. They are two storeys high with attics. A decorative band runs along the first floor, and the eaves feature a saw-tooth cornice. The terrace is designed as symmetrical pairs, stepping slightly up the hillside and reflected in the varying roof levels. Each pair features two 3-light casement windows within ashlar surrounds, flanked by doorways with ashlar lintels, panelled doors, and overlights. Above are two 2-light cross casements set under stop-chamfered ashlar lintels, all featuring small pane glazing. Walls enclose the back yards. The cottages are part of the "Model Village" built by the Bolsover Colliery Company, intended to provide housing for its workforce and planned according to enlightened Garden Suburb principles.
