Description

Numbers 120-134 form a terrace of eight colliery workers cottages built around 1891-4, possibly by Brewill & Baily. The terrace is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with decorative ridge cresting, topped with brick ridge stacks. The houses are two storeys high with attics. A decorative band runs along the first floor, and the eaves feature a saw-tooth cornice. The properties are arranged in symmetrical pairs, stepped slightly uphill, which is reflected in the varying roof levels. Each pair features two 3-light casement windows set in ashlar surrounds, flanked by doorways with ashlar lintels, panelled doors, and overlights. Above these are two 2-light cross casement windows under stop-chamfered ashlar lintels. Further dormers, resembling gables, rise above the attics, each containing 2-light casement windows under chamfered ashlar lintels. The windows have small pane glazing. Walls attached to the rear enclose the back yards. The terrace is part of the 'Model Village’ created by the Bolsover Colliery Company to accommodate its workforce, reflecting principles of Garden Suburb planning and design.
