Description
This is a terrace of eight cottages built around 1891-1894, likely designed by Brewill & Baily. The cottages were constructed for the Bolsover Colliery Company as part of a "Model Village" intended to house its workforce, reflecting Garden Suburb planning principles.
The buildings are of red brick construction with some ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof and decorative ridge cresting. Brick ridge stacks rise from the roof. The terrace is two storeys high with attics. A decorative band runs along the first floor, and the eaves feature a saw-tooth cornice. The terrace is arranged as symmetrical pairs, with each double pair stepped slightly up the hillside, which is reflected in the differing roof levels. Each pair has two 3-light casement windows within ashlar surrounds, with doorways to either side. These doorways have ashlar lintels, panelled doors, and overlights. Above the ground floor windows are two 2-light cross casements beneath stop-chamfered ashlar lintels. Gabled dormers are situated above these windows, also featuring 2-light casements under chamfered ashlar lintels. All windows contain small panes of glazing. Walls attached to the rear of the terrace enclose the back yards.
