Description

Nos 13 and 14 on Spring Road are a matching pair of houses built around 1860. They are constructed of red brick with blue brick and stone dressings, topped with slate roofs that feature corniced gable end stacks. Each house has two storeys and two bays, with two advanced gabled bays on the front elevation. The windows are plain sashes on both floors, set in chamfered segment-headed surrounds with alternating red and blue brick heads beneath stone hoodmoulds that have console stops. The houses also feature projecting stone sills on stone consoles and a blue brick corbel table. The gables are adorned with decorative pierced bargeboards, and the gable walls facing the passage between the buildings display blue brick diaper work. The entrances are located at the rear and have segment-headed doorcases in lean-to porches. These houses were likely built by the Oakes family, local ironmasters who owned much of Riddings Village.
