Description
Chevin View is an early example of back-to-back housing, built around 1790. Originally known as Berkin's Court, it consisted of 29 back-to-back houses. Currently, houses 1 to 10 have been converted into single dwellings, with numbers 9 and 10 retaining the original back-to-back layout. The terrace is three stories high and constructed from coursed sandstone. Numbers 1 to 3 feature a steeper pitch and a later 19th-century blue tiled roof, while the remaining houses have their original slate roofs. Brick chimney stacks are located on the ridge. The windows are mostly narrow, with late 19th-century sashes and 2-light casements on the top floor, all adorned with deeply tooled ashlar lintels. The west elevation still has a few original small paned sashes. Lean-to sculleries were added to the ground floor, likely in the mid-19th century. The doorways are plain, featuring slightly cambered stone voussoir arches. Stone rubble garden walls on the east front are ramped up by the doorways.
