Description
The Church of St Mary and St Andrew is a parish church located on Church Lane in Ridlington. It dates back to the 13th century, with a nave and chancel from that period. The 14th-century tower was rebuilt in 1903. The church is constructed of rubble and ashlar with a tiled roof and features a nave, chancel, aisles, a west tower, and a south porch. It underwent significant restoration in 1860.
The south aisle contains two Decorated 2-light windows, while the north aisle has three 2:3 light Decorated windows. The nave clerestory features three 2-light Perpendicular windows on both the north and south walls, along with ashlar buttressing and coping. The chancel includes one 2-light and one 1-light Perpendicular window on the south wall, a 1-light Perpendicular window on the north wall, and a four-light Perpendicular window on the east side. The western tower has an ashlar parapet and four 2-light bell openings.
Inside, the church has arcades from the 13th century, with the south arcade featuring circular piers and octagonal abaci, while the north arcade has octagonal piers. There is a 13th-century chancel arch and a Norman tympanum, which is a fragment of the original building, located on the west wall of the south aisle. Additionally, there is a wall monument with two kneeling figures dedicated to James Harrington, dated 1613, and a collection of 19th-century and earlier musical instruments mounted on the wall.
