Description
The Church of St John is a building of primarily 15th-century origin, with earlier elements dating back to around 1200. The west tower and spire were constructed in the 13th century, and a south porch was added in the 14th century. The church was restored in 1857. It consists of a three-bay nave and aisles, a two-bay chancel, a south porch, a west tower with spire, and a north vestry, all built of ashlar. The roofs are likely lead, but are not visible. The three-stage west tower has flat corner buttresses, string courses between storeys, and a table of corbel heads at the top, lit by lancet windows. The tower features two-light bell openings with Y tracery on shafts with shaft-rings and nail-head decoration. The octagonal broach spire has gabled lucarnes at the base of each cardinal side, with tracery matching the bell openings, and smaller, blocked lucarnes with nail-head decoration on the other sides. The embattled south porch has an arched entrance with open cusping on embattled capitals. A later three-light window is situated above the porch entrance, with round cusped heads beneath a hood mould, and smaller two-light Decorated windows are located to the east and west. The aisles and chancel date to the 15th century, with most of the window tracery having been recut. Inside, the nave arcade features pointed double-chamfered arches carried on cylindrical columns with waterleaf capitals. There's a 13th-century tower arch and a 15th-century chancel arch. A 15th-century clerestory and roof are supported by corbel heads. The chancel has a 19th-century roof, and contains a 14th-century two-seat sedilia with nodding ogee canopies.
