Description

Carey's House is a house, largely dating from 1834, with some elements from the 18th century. It is constructed of fine coursed rubble stone with ashlar quoins, a plinth, a first-floor band, and ashlar dressings. The roof is hipped and covered in Welsh slate, featuring four moulded stone stacks. The front elevation has two storeys with three 8/8 sash windows over one 8/12 window. Stone sills and lintels are present throughout. The central portion of the facade projects slightly, and features a sash window with a moulded stone frame above a stone doorcase flanked by a pair of Tuscan pilasters with an entablature. Three stone steps lead to a four-panelled door with an overlight containing square and rectangular glazing bars. To the right is a two-window front, with a tall, narrow round-arched fixed-light window above the lower sash. A further section to the left has additional sashes and doors, and a two-and-a-half storey wing extends to the rear, likely incorporating an 18th-century core. The interior includes a stone-flagged hall, a contemporary staircase, four-panelled doors, and simple marble fireplaces. A reference in White’s Leicestershire and Rutland, dated 1877, indicates the date of the Rectory’s rebuilding.
