Description

Uppingham School's studies, boundary wall, and gateway consist of eight studies that are now used as stores, along with the boundary wall and gateway, which likely date back to the 17th century. The studies were constructed in 1786 and later. They feature a brick front and sides, with a rear made of coursed ironstone rubble, and have a monopitch roof covered with Collyweston stone slate. At the angle of the L-plan, there is a tall octagonal moulded stone chimney stack. Each study comprises a single room with a boarded door and a single light window that has leaded panes, all set beneath timber lintels. Early 19th century hood-moulds are present above the doors. Originally, the studies were heated by a system of hot water pipes, with a central boiler located at the angle of the range. The first studies were built in 1786, and the range was gradually expanded to form two sides of a quadrangle. Sixteen studies were demolished around 1960, but the rear wall of those to the east remains as the boundary wall of the school, with patchy stonework indicating its early origin. The gateway at the south end features a three-centred arched head within a square surround and is brick-faced to the west.
