Description

SP 8699-8799 UPPINGHAM 4/6 Uppingham School: Studies, boundary wall and gateway GV II

Eight studies, now stores, boundary wall and gateway. Wall and gateway probably C17 origin, studies 1786 and later. Studies have brick front and sides, coursed ironstone rubble rear. Monopitch Collyweston stone slate roof. Tall octagonal moulded stone stack at angle of L-plan. Each study of one room with boarded door and single light window with leaded panes, beneath timber lintels. Early C19 hood-moulds above doors. Studies originally heated by system of hot water pipes with central boiler in angle of range. First studies built 1786, and range gradually expanded until it formed 2 sides of a quadrangle. Sixteen studies were demolished c.1960, but the rear wall of those to the east survives, as boundary wall to the school. Patchy stonework suggests that it has an early origin. Gateway at south end has three-centred-arched head within square surround, and is brick-faced to west.
