Description
K6 Telephone Kiosk
This K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, not perforated. Rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. Internal equipment has been modernised. The kiosk is intact and in good condition.
The kiosk sits at the center of Little Casterton village, directly in front of Hall Farmhouse, which is listed at Grade II along with its outbuildings. The Granary and Barn associated with Hall Farmhouse, also listed together at Grade II, stand adjacent to the farmhouse, and across the street is Rose Cottage (Grade II). The kiosk creates a close visual grouping with these other listed buildings.
Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, the K6 was developed from his earlier K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924 and was intended to be more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were made, with many being replaced in the 1960s, but they remain an iconic feature of Britain's streetscapes.
The K6 telephone kiosk is designated at Grade II for its strong visual relationship with other listed buildings in the village and for being a representative example of this important 20th-century industrial design.
