Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a small parish church that has undergone significant Victorian restoration, incorporating both perpendicular and earlier architectural features. The church likely has some elements dating back to the early 13th century. It consists of a nave with a west bellcote, a south aisle, and a chancel. The bell turret features paired gables with segmental arched hall openings, a lancet window in the west wall, and a date stone above that reads 1652. The south doorway is framed by a chamfered architrave and slight responds, set within a Victorian gabled porch. The south aisle has a coped gable and square-headed traceried openings with hoodmoulds and corbel heads. The chancel contains lancet windows, including three lancets that form the east window. There is a blocked tiny north doorway and a single window in the tall, buttressed north wall. Inside, the nave arcade consists of two bays with double chamfered round arches supported by round piers and responds, featuring very slender outer shafts. The nave is notably high for its length and boasts a good crown post roof. The chancel arch is a 14th-century double chamfered arch resting on five-sided piers, while the Victorian chancel roof includes chamfered curved struts on stone corbels. The church contains various high Victorian fittings, with the pulpit and lectern being particularly notable. The font, possibly from the 13th century, is octagonal with traces of paint and is supported by central and outer round shafts.
