Description

Exchange House is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the early 18th century, altered in the mid-19th century, and restored in the late 20th century. The building is made of red brick, with a painted brick ground floor and rendered gables on the left side. It features slate roofs with coped gables and a wooden modillion cornice. The structure has three storeys plus garrets and a three-window range of 16-pane sash windows above, along with three 12-pane sashes that have brick keystones. The ground floor has an arcade supported by two square stucco columns and a late 20th-century shopfront.

On the left side, facing St James Street, the building has two storeys plus attics and five bays, with a brick band and three segment-headed cross casements. There are two minor gables, each with a single window, and a mid-19th-century doorway with a cornice on the left. The main gable on the right has a single window on the upper floors, with all windows being late 20th-century replacements.

Inside, there is a restored early 18th-century dogleg staircase featuring turned and twisted balusters and intersecting moulded strings. The principal rafter roof, which has double purlins, has been altered and restored, using much reused timber. The building also has extensive rock-cut cellars on three levels.
