Description

16 and 17 Angel Row are two houses with attic workshops, currently used as shops and a café, along with adjoining offices and a warehouse. They were built around 1800 and altered and extended around 1870, with further changes made in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of painted brick with ashlar dressings and feature slate mansard roofs.

The front range is L-shaped and consists of four storeys plus attics, with a total of four windows across the front. Most windows are glazing bar sashes, many of which have been partially reglazed, and they are framed by moulded surrounds and sill bands. The ground floor has two late 20th-century shopfronts with an entrance between them. On the first floor, to the left, there is a two-light shop window from around 1870, supported by wooden pilasters and topped with a cornice. To the right, there are two sash windows. The second and third floors each have four sash windows. The mansard roof features a large seven-light workshop window on the left side.

The rear wing of the building has four and three storeys and contains eight windows, mostly margin pane sashes. There is a rear addition to the north, built around 1800, which is three storeys high and has four windows, primarily glazing bar sashes. The ranges flanking the far end of the courtyard, built around 1870, are two storeys tall and have segment-arched windows with keystones, mainly margin light sashes. At the far end of the courtyard, there is a Tudor arched door leading to a warehouse. The buildings are included for their group value.
