Description
The Dovecote is a disused structure located on Dovecote Drive in Wollaton, Nottingham. It was built in 1585 for Sir Francis Willoughby of Wollaton Hall and underwent alterations in the early 19th century. The building was restored in 1987. It is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof with plain tile verges. The dovecote has a square wooden glover, which has been renewed, topped with a pyramidal roof. Architectural details include a plinth, string courses, and an eaves band. The building is two storeys high with a rectangular plan.
The south front showcases a central 4-centred arched brick doorcase with a drip mould. On the north side, there is a board stable door to the right, flanked by two renewed 2-light casements, both with segment-headed tops. To the left, there is a blocked window, and there is also a door in the gable end. The interior features an inserted floor at one end and retains many original brick nest boxes. The Dovecote served as an ancillary building to the nearby Wollaton Old Hall.
