Description

The Chantry is a house dating from around 1500, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar and brick dressings, and has a plain tile roof. The roof features renewed brick ridge and gable stacks. The building has a plinth, and one brick-coped gable. It is two storeys high and has two bays. There is a Tudor arched ashlar doorway in the centre, flanked on the left by a small casement window. To the right of the doorway is a larger casement window within an altered opening, and then a blocked door. Above the doorway are two closely spaced Yorkshire sash windows, each with two lights. All of the window joinery is from the 19th century. The left gable has a blocked window to the garret, with an ashlar surround and label mould. Below the garret window is a 20th-century window and a blocked opening. Pevsner suggests that the building may have originally been a chantry house.
