Description
The pedestrian subway, railings, and walls on the east side of the Arboretum in Nottingham were built between 1851 and 1852 by Henry Moses Wood, the Corporation Surveyor. This structure features rockfaced stone with ashlar dressings and cast-iron railings, showcasing the Gothic Revival style. The subway itself is approximately 20 meters long and has a four-centred arch, flanked by buttresses and a moulded sill. It is bordered by low parapet walls with chamfered coping, which are topped with a spiked cast-iron railing, also around 20 meters long. On either side of the subway, there are boundary walls that run parallel to Addison Street, extending about 100 meters in length. To the south of the subway, there is a pedestrian gateway marked by ashlar piers. This subway is part of the original design of the Arboretum, which was laid out by Samuel Curtis of London during the same period.
