Description
The building is a former waterworks office, later adapted for use as a bank, constructed in 1874. It is likely designed by Thomas Hawksley. The building is built of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings, and has a roof concealed behind a panelled parapet. It is an example of Italianate style architecture.
The façade features sill and impost bands, a projecting cornice, and a modillion eaves cornice. The building has two storeys plus a basement and originally had five windows across by four windows high. The windows are mainly wooden cross casements. The symmetrical front, facing Bank Place, has round-arched windows with carved tympana and balustrade panels. The central window is distinguished by a colonnette and a small balcony supported by curved brackets. Below the central window is a doorcase with panelled pilasters and steps leading to a recessed double door with an overlight. To the right are flat-headed windows, a renewed double door, a wrought-iron gate, and an overthrow. The basement has three segment-headed openings.
The return elevation to St Peter’s Gate includes, to the right, a three-bay section with window arrangement and wrought-iron railing mirroring the front facade, and to the left, a projecting single bay with similar paired window openings.
The interior was refitted in the late 20th century. The building is attributed to Thomas Hawksley, engineer to the water company and designer of Bestwood pumping station between 1871 and 1874.
