Description

Number 9 Welford Place is a businessman’s club that has been converted into a restaurant. It was built between 1875 and 1877 and designed by Joseph Goddard. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features Welsh slate roofs. It has a basement, two storeys, and an attic.

The exterior includes a deep plinth, moulded bands at the ground and first floors, and a deep bracketed eaves band. The front facing Welford Place has a single window on the left and a large curved section with five windows on the right. To the left, there is a moulded ashlar door surround with a four-light ashlar overlight. The right side features five plate glass sash windows with plain lower sashes, two-pane upper sashes, and three-pane overlights, all topped with moulded ashlar lintels that have curved corners and decorative roundels above. Above these, there are six similar windows with segment heads, hood moulds, and central bosses. The attic section of the curved part has five linked dormer windows with sashes and tall pointed gables.

The Pocklington's Walk front has a single window on the left, a curved three-window section in the centre, and a projecting two-window square bay on the right. The left and central sections have fenestration similar to the Welford front, while the right bay has two plain sashes on each floor.

Inside, there is a large entrance hall featuring a wood block floor, a Victorian marble fireplace, and a staircase with three flights, turned balusters, and square newels topped with ball finials. The bar, billiard room, and dining room all retain their original doors, doorcases, coving, and deep skirting boards.
