Description
No. 4 Welford Place is a building dating from 1838 or 1842, designed by architect W. Flint. It features a fine classical facade made of stucco and stands two storeys tall with five windows. The central section, which contains three windows, projects forward. The facade is enhanced by paired pilasters at the corners and two Greek Ionic columns in antis that separate the windows. All windows are sashes with glazing bars set within moulded stucco architraves, and the upper storey is adorned with low stucco balusters. Additional decorative elements include a moulded frieze, a modillion cornice, and a panelled parapet with balusters over the side wings. The central door is framed by a moulded stucco architrave and topped with a small cornice supported by console brackets. The property also includes contemporary cast iron area railings of good design. Inside, there is a modest staircase that reflects the period style. This building was constructed for the Leicestershire and Midland Fire and Life Insurance Company.
