Description
The Old Lodge, located at 431 Gipsy Lane, is a lodge to the former Towers Hospital, built between 1867 and 1869 by E.L. Stephens, the Borough Surveyor. This building is designed in the Gothic Revival style, similar to the hospital itself. It is constructed of red brick with blue brick and ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs featuring a central corbelled ridge stack and dentillated eaves.
The lodge is a single-storey structure with a cruciform plan, featuring half-hipped roofs on the main axis and a gabled cross wing. The entrance front showcases a projecting gable adorned with tracery and a bargeboard. There is a canted brick and ashlar bay window, with a painted ashlar doorcase to the right, set under a relieving arch, leading to a half-glazed door. To the left of the entrance, there is a two-light mullioned window, and further left, a lower service bay with a similar window and a hipped roof. The right return features a half-hipped bay with a renewed window, also under a relieving arch.
