Description
The Allestree War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Edmund’s Church in Allestree, set slightly back beside the path leading from the lychgate to the church door. It is primarily made of Aberdeen granite and features a Celtic cross design, with interlaced decoration only on the west face of the cross. The shaft and the battered plinth are constructed from rough-hewn granite. The names of 16 individuals who died in the First World War are inscribed on two panels on the west face of the plinth, while a stone slab at the base lists the names of those who died in the Second World War. The base of the cross shaft is inscribed in black lettering with the words "THE GLORIOUS DEAD," and below this, the dates of the First World War, 1914 and 1919, are carved in relief.
