Description
Allestree Hall is a building likely constructed in 1802, as indicated by a stone that bears this date and the initials J W. The architect is not definitively known, but it is suggested that it may have been John Johnson of Leicester. The first owner appears to have been John Girardot.
The building is made of ashlar stone and has three storeys with five sash windows. It features a plinth, a sill band at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, arranged as one central and three flanking sashes on the upper floors, with a full-height bow window in the middle. The ground floor windows are three-light, elegantly designed, separated by Ionic columns and topped with an entablature. The side elevation also has five sash windows, with an additional two-storey section beyond that contains five more sash windows.
Inside, there is a bowed entrance hall and a stair hall with a stone staircase and a renewed metal balustrade. Although much of the interior has been altered, two ground floor rooms retain attractive Adam style ceilings that may be original. The hall is set within a landscape park that includes a golf course.
