Description

34-35 Sadler Gate is a pair of shops with living accommodation above, likely built around 1825, and currently vacant. The exterior features red brick with a slate roof behind a low parapet and 20th-century end stacks. The symmetrical design includes a pair of shop windows with outer recessed doorways. The building stands three storeys high and has a two-window range on the first floor with 8/8 hornless sashes. Above, there are 4/8 sashes, all under channelled lintels with triple keyblocks. A sill band and a moulded stone eaves cornice are present, along with a small cast-iron rainwater head on the left side, dated 1825. The ground floor retains key elements of the original shopfronts, including reeded jambs, a cornice hood, panelled plinths, and recessed doors with panelled reveals and overlights. Although the main windows have 20th-century glazing, they remain in their original frames. The rear of the building also retains original hornless sashes with glazing bars, except for the lower right window.

Inside, the top flights of both staircases and some fireplace surrounds are still intact, along with two door surrounds. The ground floor has had plaster removed, revealing an early 19th-century timber-framed partition wall with brick infill.

The local Directory listings for these properties date back to 1825, confirming the date of rebuilding noted on the rainwater head. This pair of purpose-built shops with accommodation above is significant for its well-preserved exterior, which features brick with painted stone lintels and cornice, as well as the main parts of the original shopfronts. The interior maintains its original room layout, the tops of the two staircases, and other internal features.
