Description
The Convent of Mercy, located at No. 11 Bridge Gate, is a building that consists of two wings. The left wing is from the early 19th century, while the right wing is likely from the late 16th century. The building is constructed of red brick and has three storeys with nine windows, which were originally sash windows but have all been replaced by modern windows. It features two decorative bands and a recessed doorway with a moulded wood doorcase and a divided door. The entrance is highlighted by a painted stone Roman Doric portico in antis, which includes two columns, two pilasters, and a triglyph frieze with paterae. The left side has plain eaves, while the right wing has a stone-coped parapet. The roof is covered with slates, and there are modern additions at the rear. The Convent of Mercy, along with the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, forms a group with St Helen's House on King Street.
