Description

This is an early to mid-19th century terrace of five storeys and a sunken basement, comprising numbers 2 to 24, St John’s North. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It features a projecting central five-bay section topped with a pediment. Detailing includes modillion cornices to the eaves and pediment, a stone cill band to the ground floor, and triple keystones above the windows in the central section. Sash windows, mostly with glazing bars, are set within gauged flat brick arches and have stone cills. Two or three stone steps lead to six-panel doors, which are contained within varying doorcases. The most common doorcase is a shallow, wide Roman Doric, pedimented prostyle porch; some porches are enriched, and some incorporate two doors. Numbers 16 and 20 feature engaged columns and an entablature beneath a wide fanlight. Number 2 has a tall prostyle porch and an added first-floor oriel. The right return contains two two-storey bays flanking the central bay, while the left return is similar but with a first-floor Venetian window. The group value is exceptional.
