Description

DARRINGTON ESTCOURT ROAD SE41NE (south side, off) 7/19 Stable block approx. 50 3.5.1987 metres east of Darrington Hall - II Stable block and coach house. Probably late C18; altered. Coursed squared magnesian limestone, stone slate roof. Long rectangular range on east-west axis. Two storeys and 9 bays, of which the first 5 are stables and the remainder the coach house, incorporating a cottage at the right-hand end. The stables have doorways with overlights alternating with windows; the coach-house has 3 segmental arched coach doorways (the 3rd blocked and replaced with an archway doorway and a small window), and a sashed window to the cottage; all these windows are 12-pane sashes with flat-arched heads. At 1st floor both parts have square windows, mostly 6-pane sashes except in the stables, where the 2nd bay has a small loading door and the windows have wooden grilles in the lower leaf. Gable copings with kneelers; ridge chimney between 8th and 9th bays. Interior: stables retain iron stalls, and related fittings, and are still in use.
