Description
The Darrington Church of England School, located on Philip’s Lane, was built in the mid to later 19th century and has undergone alterations and enlargements since. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a slate roof. The building, arranged in a T-shape, comprises a five-bay range running east-west, with a projecting south wing at its centre. The architectural style is Gothic, with a symmetrical south front. Features include a chamfered plinth and a buttressed gable to the south wing, which features a large transomed window of five stepped cusped lights, a blind wheel window at the apex, and a small bellcote with a cusped opening. The side walls have square-headed mullioned windows, and near the main range are shouldered doorways with hoodmoulds; the eastern doorway has been altered to a window. Above the doorways are trefoil windows. Each wing has a projecting chimney stack with offsets, and a transomed window of two cusped lights, along with a buttressed gable mirroring the south gable. All windows have diamond lattice glazing with margin panes. The roof is covered with fish-scale slates. The rear wall has five bays, buttresses, transomed windows of two cusped lights, and altered glazing. Additions at the northwest corner are not part of this listing. The building is included on the list for its group value.
