Description

Darrington Windmill is a tower windmill, now used as a store, likely built in the late 18th century or very early 19th century, and has been altered. It features handmade brick that encloses a timber frame, with a conical basement and four stages. On the northeast side, there is a wide segmental arched wagon entrance to the basement, while the north side has a plain doorway leading to the first stage. Above this, there are square segmental-headed windows at each stage, which are variously offset and all blocked. The east side has a similar blocked window at the first stage, and the west side has windows at each stage, all blocked or reduced. The south side has a doorway to the first stage that has been altered to a window and blocked, along with two blocked windows above it. The superstructure is missing. Inside, the timber frame consists of central pillars that support massive moulded saddle beams, which carry the floors of the first and second stages, seemingly independent of the brick shell. The second stage retains the original vertical drive shaft, large iron cogwheels, and three sets of grindstones.
