Description
The Chapel of St Mary, located on the east side of Wakefield Bridge, dates from around 1350. It features three bays and is supported by a high, blank undercroft with foundations in the water. The chapel is constructed of ashlar stone and has a parapet with ogee blank arcading, which was restored in the 19th century. The west front is a reproduction of the original design, which is now at Kettlethorpe Hall. This front includes five narrow bays that contain three doors, with traceried panels between and narrow outer sections. The elaborate framing features crocketed ogee arches set within ornamented gables, and a tall parapet displays five relief panels depicting scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin. The east window has five lights and similar tracery to the side windows. Inside, the chapel has a rebuilt roof made of old timber, with panels that have borders and bosses, and applied tracery in the east bay. There is leafy carving on the tie beams and above the tracery. A small newel staircase is located in the north-east corner, and there is a crocketed spirelet above a replaced figure of a saint on the east wall. The chapel also features a piscina with a crocketed ogee head.
