Description
The Flockton Waggonway Tunnel and entrance portal, located approximately midway between the junctions of Hardcastle Lane and the track to New Hall Farm in Middlestown, dates from 1772 to 1775. The portal was rebuilt around 1986 and features rubble flanking walls and a vaulted tunnel. The tunnel extends northward for about 50 metres but is currently blocked. This structure represents the remains of a wooden waggonway that connected Flockton colliery to the canal staithes at Horbury Bridge. Rails were added later, and the route underwent alterations over the years. The colliery closed during a strike in 1893 and never reopened, making this a rare survival of its kind.
