Description

Nos 3-9 Corn Market are houses that have been converted into three shops, along with a surgery and offices. They likely date from the 17th century but were re-fronted in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red and brown brick in English garden wall bond and feature a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high with a loft and have a first-floor window arrangement of 1:2:2:1:2.

On the ground floor, there is a passage opening on the far left that leads to Swales Yard Cottages at the rear. Below the sixth window, there is a recessed part-glazed door, and the shop fronts added in the 20th century are not of special interest. The first-floor windows are late 19th-century sashes, but the first three bays have been replaced with 20th-century casements, all featuring voussoired wedge lintels and 20th-century artificial stone quoined jambs.

The front wall rises to a coped parapet above the eaves of the steeply-pitched roof, which has four dormer windows—three gabled and one with a flat pent roof. There is a brick ridge stack located between the third and fourth bays. According to the 1968 list description, there is a 17th-century open hearth fireplace concealed in No 3, which remains hidden. Other interior details were not inspected.
