Description
Nos 37 and 39 on Queen Street are shop premises with a timber frame that likely dates back to the 16th century, encased in brick from probably the 19th century. The front of the building is rendered, and it features a stone roof on the front range, while the rear wing has a slate roof. The structure is two storeys high with a two-bay front and a single-bay wing at the rear, which was once part of a now-removed third bay to the left. There are two entrances and altered windows on the ground floor, along with two casement windows on the first floor that have slightly cambered heads.
No 37 includes a single-storey lean-to shop built in the late 20th century on the site of the demolished front left bay, which is not of special interest. The rear wing features a ground floor window with a cambered head and a tripartite square-headed window on the first floor with horizontal sliding sash. Inside, the timber framing is visible, showcasing three pairs of jowelled posts and wall plates. The left truss has only a visible tie beam, the centre truss includes a king-post and raking queen struts with some repair work evident in the housings under the tie-beam for studding, while the right truss has a king-post and vertical studs. Some braces have been removed, and a chamfer is visible on the front wall plate for a window opening. A stop-chamfered spine beam supports the chamfered joists of the first floor. The rear wing has trusses with very deep, cambered tie-beams supported on posts.
