Description

Purston Hall is a large house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the 1820s and altered in 1863. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof. It features a rectangular double pile plan with service wings on the left side. The front block, which faces south, is two storeys high and has five bays across the width and three bays deep, creating a symmetrical appearance.

There is a first-floor band, and the three-bay centre of the front block projects slightly forward. This section includes a rectangular single-storey porch with a round-headed doorway that has imposts and a semicircular fanlight, which lacks glazing bars, all framed within an eared architrave. The porch also features a moulded cornice and a low parapet, although a modern ramped approach to the porch is not included in the listing. Above the porch, there is another doorway with a moulded architrave, and modern railings to the porch balcony are also excluded from the listing.

On each floor, there are four sashed windows without glazing bars, and both floors have sill bands. The building is topped with a moulded cornice and a low-pitched hipped roof, which currently lacks chimneys. The return walls match the style of the front, and the three-bay service wing set back at the left end is similar, although its windows are mostly 12-pane sashes. At the rear, there is an attached block under a parallel roof, which has five bays across and two bays deep, matching the style of the front. This rear block features a pedimented centre with the date "1863" inscribed in the pediment.
