Description
The well house, reputedly medieval and restored, is located in a field behind "Woodlands" on Nostell Lane. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and features a pitched roof made of the same material. The small rectangular structure measures approximately 3 by 4 metres and is oriented on a north-south axis with a steeply-pitched roof.
The north gable wall includes a square-headed doorway with a broad chamfered surround, a round-headed niche above the doorway, and a small pedestal at the apex that likely supported a finial or cross. Each low side wall has a broad step or ledge, which may have served as a stand for water vessels or a seat. Inside, there are two steps leading down to a stone cistern with a marginal channel, and the roof is barrel-vaulted.
