Description
The Old Schoolroom is a building that now serves as a parish room, likely dating from the 16th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and has a stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular single-cell plan and is a single storey. The symmetrical two-bay south front features a central moulded Tudor-arched doorway with a board door that has ornamental strap hinges. There are two buttresses flanking the doorway, and each bay contains a recessed mullioned window with five Tudor-arched lights, hollow spandrels, and a hoodmould. An external chimney stack is located at the left gable, which is embraced by a low added outbuilding. The rear wall has two inserted three-light casement windows. The interior has been altered, with the roof concealed by a ceiling. Historically, Prudence, the wife of Richard Berrie and niece of Sir Richard Gargrave of Kinsley, endowed the school in the mid-17th century, and it was mentioned in 1660 as a free school for the manor of Havercroft.
