Description

Dandy Mill is a windmill that has been converted into a farm store. It was built in 1819 for the Boreas Union Mill Company. The structure is made of bitumened red brick in English garden wall bond and features a six-storey tower that tapers inward, resting on a steeply battered base. The top ten courses of the tower have been rebuilt in stretcher bond. Most of the openings are vertically aligned and have segmental header brick arches. The original windows are almost square and have projecting stone sills. On the south side, there is a ground-floor doorway, and the first and second floors have openings that were once doorways but have since been partly blocked to create windows. There are no openings on the fourth or fifth floors. On the west side, a first-floor window has an ashlar lintel inscribed "BOREAS Union Mill 1819." The east side features a ground-floor doorway.

Inside, the floors are supported by a single beam, but they were damaged when machinery was removed during World War II. The sails and cap of the windmill had been taken off before that, as the mill was later powered by a gas turbine. Dandy Mill is now the only remaining windmill in Pontefract, whereas there were once several. The name "Dandy," referring to the north wind, also suggests an early farmers' co-operative, which was common in the early 19th century as a way to challenge the old manorial monopoly on milling. There is no sign of a balcony on the structure.
