Description

Hall Croft is a former rectory to the Church of St. James in Chapelthorpe, now functioning as a house. The building dates from the mid-18th century and features a rear kitchen wing, with an early 19th-century house attached at right angles. It is constructed of punch-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The structure is two storeys tall with a cellar and presents a T-shaped, three-bay symmetrical facade. There is a plinth, and the doorway is framed by an architrave, accessed by a short flight of steps. The windows are 16-pane sash types set in raised plain surrounds, and there are ashlar gable stacks.

At the rear, there is an earlier gabled wing with quoined angles, an altered window, and a large window above in plain stone surrounds. A lateral stack is located to the left, and there is an outshut to the right with an inserted doorway. Above the outshut, on the main house, is a stair window featuring a 2-paned fixed light. The right-hand return has a low-level window that lights one of the cellars, with the lintel inscribed "DAIRY."

Inside, the front door opens into a stair-hall that features a two-turn staircase with stick balusters, slender turned newels, and a swept handrail. The hall ceiling is plastered with an oval decorative feature, and there are six-panel doors in architraves. The front dining room includes a tall corner cupboard with arched doors that have raised-and-fielded panels, a dentil cornice, and a curved serving hatch to the rear with a curved sliding door. The window surround in this room is panelled and includes shutters. The parlour has a similar window surround. Curved stone steps lead down to two barrel-vaulted cellars.
