Description
Hill House Rock House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It likely dates from the 16th century, was enlarged in the 17th century, and altered in the 18th century. The building is constructed of sandstone random rubble and incorporates parts of an earlier timber-framed structure, topped with a slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan formed by a three-bay range that was originally timber-framed, built gable to the road, with an added one-bay wing at the north end of the west side.
The farmhouse is three storeys high. The north side, facing the road, features one window on each floor of the first bay, and two additional windows at the first floor to the right. All windows are 2-light casements with restored surrounds, though they vary in size. The roof is hipped. The left return wall has a large external chimney stack, with a restored or inserted cross-window behind it, and a small 2-light window. The rear gable includes a small single-light window at the first floor and a 2-light recessed mullioned attic window, which is missing its mullion. Other openings are of lesser interest.
Inside, the three-bay range (Rock House Farmhouse) contains parts of two timber cross frames and the wall plate between them on the west side, which can be seen in the adjoining Hill House. This includes jowelled wall posts, braces to the tie beams, and some wattle staves. On the ground floor of the northern frame, there is a relocated shaped and nicked timber lintel. In the east wall of the northern bay, there is a bread oven next to an altered fireplace, and above this on the first floor, there is an original chamber fireplace with a four-centred head. The wing (Hill House) features some large beams and the exposed side of the remains of two wall posts and a wall plate from the original main range.
