Description
Town End Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations probably occurring in the 18th century and later. It's constructed with a timber frame, later encased in large, coursed squared sandstone, and has a roof of stone slates, now coated, along with pantiles. The cottage originally had a two-unit plan, with a rear outshut added later. The two-storey, two-bay south front features two altered windows on each floor; the ground-floor windows are vertically rectangular, while those above are square. A ridge chimney is present. A glazed lean-to conservatory covers the entrance into the outshut on the right-hand gable wall.
Internally, remnants of the original timber-frame construction are visible, including two of the original three wallposts in the rear wall, wallplates in both front and rear walls, tie-beams at each end and in the centre, and one pair of purlins. At the west end, these purlins terminate on a light tie beam or collar approximately 1.5 metres from the gable wall, indicating possible remains of a former smoke bay or smoke hood. A stone staircase is located in the outshut, rising along the outside of the former rear wall, suggesting the area was once open or had a ladder stair to a loft.
