Description

32, 34, and 36 Commercial Street is a house that has been converted into two shops and an office. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and has been altered over time. The building features a timber frame with scored stucco and render, likely over stone, topped with a stone slate roof. It consists of three units, with a short but broad gabled wing at the rear of the left half (Nos. 36 and 34). There are later additions to the rear of No. 32 that are of less interest. The building is two storeys high, with a plinth and coved eaves. It has three inserted doors and three square shop windows with simple architraves, arranged irregularly, alongside a sashed window at the right-hand end and three square windows above. A chimney is located on the ridge and at the right-hand end. The rear of the building features the gabled part with two doors and three windows, also arranged irregularly.

Inside, No. 36 (the left end) boasts unusually fine moulded plaster decoration on both floors. The ground floor front has a ceiling adorned with geometrical panels featuring vigorously twined foliage with fruit, along with clusters of fruit in the interstices and a moulded frieze, particularly over the chimney breast. In the small back kitchen, there is a large diamond-shaped panel that contains a smaller one framing a decorated shield, with hearts in the corners and winged animals with urns along the sides. On the first floor, in a small rear room, there is a deep frieze of Jacobean design featuring pomegranates.

Historically, it is said to have been a manor house.
