BARDSEY-CUM-RIGTON CHURCH LANE SE34SE LS17 (east side, off)

Sundial approx 5m 7/2 south of porch of Church of All Hallows

Sundial. Initialled and dated "I M : I B / 1751". Roughly-dressed base in which is sunk ashlar pillar surmounted by copper dial. Base: 2 stepped tiers of large blocks. Square pier sweeps out to head with initials on north face and date on west face. Circular dial sunk in lead has makers name engraved: "J. SAUL" FECIT To centre of dial is lively engraving of Father Time as bearded winged angel holding an hour glass and with sun ray eminating from his navel, the gnomen set between his splayed legs.

J. Saul was the local schoolteacher and the initials on the dial are those of the 2 churchwardens Jonathan Midgley and John Butterfield. A church terrier records that in 1750 Samuel Abbot was paid 4/- for a dial stone.
