Description
The sundial, located approximately 5 meters south of the porch of the Church of All Hallows, is dated 1751 and features the initials "I M : I B". It has a roughly-dressed base made of large blocks arranged in two stepped tiers, supporting a square ashlar pillar topped with a copper dial. The pillar has initials on its north face and the date on its west face. The circular dial, set in lead, is engraved with the maker's name "J. SAUL FECIT". At the center of the dial is a lively engraving of Father Time, depicted as a bearded winged angel holding an hourglass, with sun rays emanating from his navel and the gnomon positioned between his splayed legs. J. Saul was the local schoolteacher, and the initials on the dial belong to the churchwardens Jonathan Midgley and John Butterfield. A church record from 1750 notes that Samuel Abbot was paid 4 shillings for a dial stone.
