Description

A row of four estate worker's houses dating from the early 19th century, likely designed by Peter Atkinson based on plans by John Carr for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. The houses are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They are arranged as single cells of double-depth, with two storeys and attics to the wings. The symmetrical facade has eight bays. The outer two bays project slightly and are taller. The houses have an ashlar plinth, a first-floor band, and eaves bands which continue as impost bands on the wings. The outer bays feature doorways with monolithic lintels, positioned to one side of the windows. Above the doorways, semicircular-arched recesses contain flat-arched windows with voussoirs, and the attic windows are set within an archway with a segment-headed design. The central four bays have two doorways flanked by two windows, with four windows above them, all with monolithic lintels decorated with false voussoirs. Most of the windows have been altered, with changed glazing. A central ridge stack is present, and the wings have hipped roofs with ridge stacks. The houses are complementary to numbers 2-5 opposite.
