Description
Number 1 and its attached screen wall are an early 19th century house, likely designed by Peter Atkinson of York based on plans by John Carr for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. The house is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and is two storeys high. The front of the house has two windows to the first floor. A doorway with a wooden surround and hood is on the left, above which is a tripartite sash window contained within a flat-arch with voussoirs. There is a casement-moulded cornice. To the left, a wall extends through the site, pierced by a segmental-arched entrance to a rear courtyard and finished with ashlar coping. To the right, a bay projects slightly and features a semicircular arched recess with an impost band, containing a flat-arched window, with a smaller window above in the upper arch. The right return displays three recessed archways with impost bands and windows similar to those on the front. The second bay is blind, while the third bay was altered around 1930 with the addition of a bay window below and a Diocletian window above. The added section has a 16-pane sash window, with a window above. The left-hand return has a mid-20th century canted bay. The house was added to The Avenue as an entrance pavilion, alongside the Old Vicarage, to provide the main approach to Harewood House.
