Description

A row of four early 19th century estate worker’s cottages, now converted into three dwellings, located on The Avenue, Harewood. The cottages were likely designed by Peter Atkinson (of York) based on a plan by John Carr for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. They are constructed of punch-dressed, herringbone-tooled stone, with a stone slate roof. The buildings comprise four single cells, arranged in a double-depth layout. There are eight windows on the first floor. Architectural details include a plinth, quoins and monolithic jambs to one side of the windows. Each cottage has a doorway with an overlight, and the windows have flush plain-stone surrounds with 16-pane Yorkshire sashes, some of which have been altered. An eaves band runs along the top of the walls, and the roof is hipped, with two ridge stacks.
