Description
The Driver Memorial, located approximately 10 meters west of the Church of St Mark, was erected around 1859. It is made of stone and pink marble. The memorial features a square low curb with remnants of a cast-iron rail, a stepped plinth with an inscription on the east side, and an entablature and cornice adorned with egg-and-dart moulding. It is topped by a stone canopy supported by four squat marble shafts, with a square finial above. The memorial honors Richard Driver of Bagbie Lodge, who passed away in 1859. The inscription reads: "FOR MANY YEARS MERCHANT OF THIS TOWN,/ WHO BY STRICT INTEGRITY, AND PUNCTUALITY/ IN BUSINESS, DESERVED AND WON THE CONFIDENCE/ OF HIS EQUALS, AND IN HIS DEATH, BY HIS/ LIBERALITY, EARNED THE BLESSING OF THE POOR."
