Description
Number 12 is an office building dating from around 1900, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is possibly designed by WH Thorp. The building features ashlar stonework and a grey slate roof, along with wrought-iron railings. It stands three storeys high with an attic over a basement and has three bays. The ground floor displays banded rustication. The entrance is located on the right and is framed by attached columns that support a segmental broken pediment, topped with a semicircular overlight. The central window is wide and segmental-arched, featuring a hollow chamfered surround and a female mask on the keystone, with a narrower window to the left. The upper floors have bowed three-part windows with attached Ionic columns, flanked by sash windows set in elaborate eared and shouldered architraves, complete with pediments above the first floor. The attic window is adorned with a balustraded parapet, a segmental pediment, and a relief of a phoenix. The interior has not been inspected. The detailing is similar to that found in Thorp's YMCA building in Albion Place.
