Description
Athenaeum House is a building located in Leeds, constructed around 1890 and altered in the 20th century. Designed by William Bakewell, it features a Gothic Revival style and is built from ashlar with a slate roof. The structure stands four storeys tall with an attic and consists of six bays.
On the ground floor, there is an arcade of four wide Tudor arches, modern shop windows, an entrance to the staircase for the upper floors on the left, and a carriageway on the right. The first, second, and third floors are adorned with canted bay windows that include mullions and transoms. The first and sixth bays extend up to attic pavilions, which have steeply-pitched hipped roofs topped with finials. The second to fifth bays feature four-light windows with traceried heads on the first and third floors and transoms on the second floor. Between the windows on the second floor, there are canopied niches that contain tall carved figures dressed in robes. The building is finished with a bracketed eaves cornice and a balustraded parapet situated between the end pavilions. The interior has not been inspected.
